The origin Story of N.o.B.S. Outdoors

Never Omit Basic Skills Outdoors (N.O.B.S. Outdoors) is a project many years in the making. Having spent a large portion of life in the outdoors, its time to share the future adventures and maybe throw in a few from the past for those interested.

Having traveled around the world over the years, sometimes it’s important to look next door for the next adventure. While showing far away places and some of the exotic bucket list trips seems to be the rage these days on social media. My 5-year-old son Everett has reminded me of how interesting it can be just to take a hike, bike ride, or go camping around the local area.

Sometimes we forget that our bucket list of trips and adventures are just a trip to someone else’s backyard. While it is fun exploring the world from the Alps to the Southern tip of Africa, backpacking through Europe to fishing in Baja, we have some pretty cool things in our backyard too.

This site will explore our backyard and the places that we visit here. To share the places people from around the world come to visit, starting in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina and the Smoky Mountains of East Tennessee.

We will post photos of our trips under the State Tab depending on where the trip involved happens to have taken place. Each blog of a specific trip will have the general location in the title and a URL for the website if the location has one. 

Most of the site initially will revolve around our photography as we learn to use our camera to document the places we visit. Everett loves to take pictures for “work” as he calls it. (Due to my day job revolving around taking a lot of non-artistic photos). He loves having a “job” and has been working with my cameras since he was just over 2 years old.  

We will share not only travel and basic skills for the outdoors. We have a variety of interests that may pop up from time to time as we explore this thing called life. With my personal background in life and the zeal of a child we should keep this interesting. 

Growing up in the mountains here was always an adventure and created the wanderlust that has taken me around the world over the years, and I hope documenting our travels leaves a bit of a desire to travel in all of those that choose to tag along on our new adventures. 

Sharing our adventures will hopefully give you ideas to come visit some of them or to maybe look at your own backyard for adventures closer to home. 

We will share some basics along the way for ideas to make your trips easier and provide a little understanding of why we do things certain ways. From places to go, setting up a camp site,  cooking over a fire, our failures/successes along the way and much much more as we go along. Always keeping in mind the basics.

This will be a longer-term project to explore not only our back yard but wherever we are lucky enough to go.
